Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as a little girl. She was an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to make use of art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
